General Funston Moves Against Archbishop Ireland

General Frederick Funston, returning home with the Twentieth Kansas, wired Topeka lawyers to sue Archbishop Ireland of St Paul for criminal libel over interview statements. He also seeks action against the Monitor, a San Francisco Catholic paper that published the story. Ireland had been quoted saying Funston faced looting accusations in a Chicago interview.

Two Offenders Plead Guilty in District Court

In district court yesterday Carl Helmuth and Frank Marin pleaded guilty to charges from the previous day’s grand jury. Helmuth received two years in state prison, broke down crying as Judge Bonnifield imposed sentence. Marin withdrew his not guilty plea and was sentenced to four years. James O’Donnell faced five indictments for forgery and was given until 3 pm to plead. The grand jury continued work on the Bouton case with no further report this afternoon.

A Pleasant Hallowe'en Party At Bridge Street

A cheerful Hallowe en party at Mr. and Mrs. J A Rogers on Bridge street lasted until 11 o clock. Old fashioned games charades and fortune telling preceded a dining room supper where friends pledged affection and merriment carried into the night. Guests wished for many more such times and promised to meet next Hallowe en.

Sing Lee was brought to Justice Rutherford's court after arrest for allegedly attempting to kill Wong Tan last Sunday. Bail set at 3500, cash deposited, and he was released. The Sing Lee faction swore out warrants for Wong san for the shooting and for another man to create the impression of an earlier life-threatening event. Tan's bail was 200, paid, and he was freed amid fears of gang plotting against him.

Mystery of a Woman's Death at Forty-Second Street

Mrs J Rush Branch found dead with a bullet in her head in her first floor apartment at 42nd Street Chicago. The body had likely lain for a week with fingerprints and bloodstains nearby and a revolver with an empty chamber on a bed. Neighbors heard of a possible husband visiting and a strange man was seen in the front room while the janitor repaired a gas jet. Letters to a Mrs Mabel Downs suggest a dual life. The coroner will investigate the case.
