Secretary of State Walter Gresham died in Washington at 1 15 this morning from a pleurisy attack that began May 1. Born in Corydon Indiana on March 17 1832 he served as a brigadier general in the Civil War and fought with Sherman to the sea. He was a U S district judge for twelve years and held posts as postmaster general and treasurer before becoming Secretary of State under Cleveland. His career was noted for uprightness fairness and universal respect as a statesman.
The Supreme Court denied Debs and other strikers habeas corpus relief. It held federal power extends to inter state commerce and civil courts, and Debs must serve six months. Debs blamed corporations and trusts for the decision and asserted federal control. A breakfast ad lists bacon and eggs per unit prices.
