Taxation of railroads in Nevada sparks legislative debate
The Reno Journal urges a State Board of Equalization to tax railroads fairly, citing California’s valuation and proposing a uniform rate. It recalls an 1879 bill by Senator Cresswell and votes in the Assembly, noting politicians’ coin influence and contrasting views by local Assemblymen Melarkey and Morrison. The piece links silver politics to national figures and a 1880 presidential context.

Sherman presses silver demonetization drive in Congress
A letter from New York Assistant Treasurer reports 13 million dollars in silver in the Sub Treasury and a capacity to take only 10 million more. The Treasury official warns of a growing glut if coinage continues at two million monthly. Critics note Sherman’s anti silver stance and question why Treasury cannot reduce vault stock or adjust coinage to ease excess. The piece hints at wider political friction involving federal expenditures and public finance.
