Washington May 19. Martin F. Cook and Henry G. Laynes, New York liquor dealers, testified to the Industrial Commission about the whisky trust. Cook said a Standard Company rebated 14 percent per gallon but demanded buying only from Standard. the firm declined and started its own distillery. Laynes said the trust cuts prices in some localities to crush rivals, aided by huge capitalization. The commission will resume June 6 to hear the sugar trust case. McGready Halzell of Houston presided over the Cumberland Presbyterian General Assembly that day and Dr. Wm Darby outlined a plan to raise 1.9 million dollars for education by 1900.
