May 19 Ha vana reports the Spanish fleet remains missing while Schley s squadron blocks the north Cuban coast. Secretary Long has no new location for the fleet and no battle expected with Sampson s squadron. Two Spanish torpedo boats reach Las Palmas and a German warship arrives at Havana.
British garrison soldiers out boating near Giprattar yesterday attempted to land on Spanish soil. They were fired upon and one soldier sustained a wound.
The cruiser Charleston, which sailed for Manila yesterday, is back at Mare Island due to condensers being out of order.
London reports the death of William Ewart Gladstone at his home Ha. Warden at five o'clock this morning. The former prime minister and long time statesman passed away after a long public career marked by reforms and leadership.
Reports say the battleship Oregon nears joining Sampson's fleet with no official confirmation. Secretary Long stated the Oregon is safe and location cannot be disclosed. The text also includes an unrelated testimonial about Chamberlain's Pain Balm from A. T. Morsaux of Laverne Minnesota.

Secretary Alger proposes a second assistant secretary of war for wartime with a $4000 salary.
War department announced General Merritt will command a 15000 strong division formed from 4000 regulars plus selected volunteers from many states. Troops from New York Ohio Michigan Illinois Minnesota Nebraska and Pennsylvania join. 1000 tons of supplies aboard City of Peking. Otis leads the advance to Cavite to establish a camp for subsequent forces. The plan aims to secure governance across the Philippine islands.
