Cattle Market Shifts and Breeding Trends of 1891–1899
W P Anderson notes in the San Antonio Express that 1891 to 1892 saw widespread selling of marketable cattle without regard to quality. A spaying program for heifers began to curb overproduction, ending in 1894, while pure bred bulls were preserved, boosting breeding stock during 1895–1899. The share of female cattle on markets fell after 1894, signaling tighter supplies and a rebound in cattle numbers due to continued reproduction incentives.
