Official reports say the cruisers Marblehead Nashville and auxiliary Windom arrived at Cienfuegos and fought Spanish troops to sever the Havana Santiago cable. After a furious clash with fort defenders and infantry the Americans cut the cable. one sailor was killed and six wounded.
Spanish fleet sighted about one hundred miles off Venezuela coast and racing at full speed. It has covered six hundred fifty miles since sighting near Martinique. Reported surrender of San Juan Puerto Rico has not been confirmed.
