At Colenso Feb 28 the Boers suffered heavy losses as lyddite fouled trenches. Over a hundred prisoners were taken and a twenty year old woman died fatally wounded after remaining with the Boers till three hours before the British attack.

Cape Town March 2 General Cronje and his party arrived there today. He was received by General Sir Frederick Vorestier Walker and a representative of Sir Alfred Milner, the governor of Cape Colony.

Dutch Residents Arrested as Rebels

Rensberg March 1 Dutch residents at Colesburg were largely arrested as rebels. Boers retreated northward with a British force in pursuit. President McKinley and party left Washington for New York to attend the Ohio Society dinner tomorrow night. Calumet and Hecla Mining Co directors in Boston declared a dividend of 20 a share.

General Strike of Machinists Looms in Chicago

In Chicago on March 2 the International Association of Machinists and the Chicago Association of Machinery Manufacturers failed to reach an agreement. Machinists may strike tonight, with non-union shops closing. Columbus Ohio reports a citywide union strike while Canada holdings may follow. The president warns a life and death battle could expand to other metalworking unions nationwide.

The Republican State convention in Salt Lake met at 11:30 to nominate a candidate for Representative in Congress.
