Populist Convention in St. Louis Faces Strife and Deadlock
At the 1996 Populist convention in St. Louis the hall opened with only about half the delegates seated. A banner incident from the Texas delegation sparked protests as committees formed to meet with the silver committee. Debate over the order of nominations stirred factional splits, with a 785 to 615 vote backing a minority report favoring vice presidential before presidential nomination. General Weaver read the platform, minority reports were presented, and the session adjourned to continue votes. A later item reported a fatal self-inflicted shooting by David Potter near Carson, ending his pain after a Civil War era life.
