An advertisement extols Syrup of Figs as a pure liquid laxative from the California Fig Syrup Co. It claims quick relief from constipation, cleanses the system, and helps with colds headaches and fevers while benefiting kidneys liver and bowels without weakness. It sells in 50c and $1 bottles with the company name printed on each package and warns against substitutes.
Tickets sold and baggage cheered through to eastern points as Travelers Insurance tickets issued via J. A. Fernano, Agent.
President Cleveland issues a proclamation urging strikers to disperse before noon and effectively declares martial law in Chicago. Rioting spreads with mob violence, arson, and track damage in Cutcaco and other areas as police and military units restore order and prepare further military actions.
Reports from Hammond Indiana detail a 5000 strong mob attack on Co B of the 5th U S infantry at 3 pm causing two mob deaths and multiple critical injuries. Regulars and militia fought rioters, burned a Pullman coach, derailed freight cars, and blocked telegraph lines amid a broader strike wave.
Special to the Silver Strate from Sr. Petersavne reports thirty nine new cholera cases and thirteen deaths today. Five cases are recorded at Dobun in Courland. A California pioneer, J. G. Sykes ex assemblyman ex postmaster and pioneer, died tonight in Grass Valley California.
The Southern Pacific depot was deserted as strikers retired to Front street headquarters. Harry Knox denied rumors of dynamite and said they would not employ cowardly measures. Governor Mathews ordered 15 militia companies to Hammond, totaling 750 soldiers, with a train carrying light artillery leaving this afternoon.
