Terrible Deed of a Father at Los Angeles
A Los Angeles dispatch reports W. H. Person, formerly in the Santa Fe freight department, attempted to murder his eight year old daughter and then killed himself by taking poison. He persuaded the child to drink carbolic acid so she could join her dead mother in heaven. The child survived after hospital care. she said she obeyed him. Bell found Person dying after receiving his letter about the act. The notice notes a separate public exam for teachers on July 12, 1897.
