Stewart Elected United States Senator on First Ballot
In Carson the Nevada legislature re elected Wm. M. Stewart to the U.S. Senate on the first ballot amid a tense session. Senator Livingstone of Ormsby nominated Stewart, with rival nominations from W. W. Williams, A. C. Cleveland, and others. The house attempted to locate missing Gillespie, then adjourned briefly before continuing. Newlands commented that anti-Stewart forces won the campaign but Stewart secured a majority in the legislature.
