Marcus Daly, a 58 year old mining businessman, testified to the Committee on Elections about his campaign contributions to Clark. He recalled giving 4,500 initially and 2,500 later plus 500 in Deer Lodge County and other instances. He denied pressuring miners to vote his way and said he gave Whiteside nothing to defeat Clark.

Washington Feb 28 Levi R Miler testified again before the House Military Committee on Idaho labor troubles. He reiterated prior remarks saying several men were arrested for talking with persons unfriendly to the mining company. Hearing adjourned until Wednesday.

Truckee Reports Smallpox Case on Railroad Route

Sacramento February 26 C A Wahlstrom a freight conductor for the Central Pacific Railroad running between Wadsworth Nevada and Truckee California is ill with smallpox at Truckee. He has been placed in quarantine and no other cases are found. George Wooley Allen longtime editor of the Philadelphia Evening Telegram died at his home in Philadelphia yesterday.

Lake Cut-Off Survey Advances From Ogden

Southern Pacific surveyors led by Chief Engineer D D Griffiths moved from Ogden to a midpoint between the Ogden River and Great Salt Lake to survey the Lucia to Ogden cut-off. The plan ties to the old SP line near the Ogden River and heads south past Slaterville and Little Mountains to the lake, with a bridge across the lake projected as nineteen and a half miles long. Estimated cost approaches six million dollars but is justified by a shorter route and easier grades.

Supreme Court upholds Utah criminal process provisions

The U S Supreme Court ruled Utah may use information process in criminal cases and allow juries of eight, not twelve, finding no violation of the Federal Constitution. Justice Peckham delivered the opinion in Maxwell vs Warden of the State Penitentiary with Justice Harlan dissenting on due process grounds.
