Ladysmith Feb 8 British troops holding John’s Drift kopje abandoned the position after a Boer bombardment this morning and retired across the Tugela to their previous lines. A desultory cannonade continues at the river as quiet holds otherwise.
War Office reports no knowledge of General Buller's retreat as described by a dispatch from Beer Head Laager. Officials appeared dumbfounded when shown the message, noting Buller's dispatches earlier claimed hopeful progress. Boer source reports of retirement sparked British disappointment and concern over potential river crossing.
London reports no new Buller developments as of February 8. Frere Camp dispatches indicate heavy Boer resistance on both flanks delaying forward artillery positions and reinforcements. San Francisco February 9 The steamer Alameda arrived from Australian ports via Apia Samoa and Honolulu. Alameda ordered to quarantine but Dr Kinyoun reports no new plague cases in Honolulu since January 25. About 7400 Japanese and Chinese remain in quarantine and three detention camps are set up. Alameda did not dock at Honolulu, instead lay off the port for six hours.
Benjamin Royce a well to do farmer near Washington was killed last night by his grandson Frank Royce. He then burned the body and killed himself. Local authorities investigate the grisly familicide and arson suicide case in February.
In Frankfort on February 9, Republicans debate the Louisville peace pact. Governor Taylor faces statewide telegram pressure to hold firm, while party members dispute the agreement and await the full text before siding. Taylor plans no public statement until he can assure the party’s benefit. He intends to hear objections before deciding.
Warrants to arrest enough absent Democratic members in both Kentucky houses to form a quorum are expected today. Senator Cox asserts a quorum will be established in both chambers, while executive session resolutions name W. S. Two men suspected in Governor Goebel’s murder were arrested in a boarding house in Frankfort today. Silas Jones of Whittley county and Gottschalk of Nelson county are confined pending clearer evidence of their involvement. Both deny knowledge of the crime.
