A Nevada reader defends the state's condition against Wells Drury's article in Nevada Magazine. He notes rising farming, irrigation potential from storage projects, and strong livestock markets, asserting Nevada's economy and school fund are sound with prosperous farmers, merchants, and banks.
The 150 victims of the Maine disaster were buried at Arlington with full military honors on a snowy day. President McKinley, Cabinet members, Admiral Dewey, and other dignitaries attended as coffins lay in the open graves guarded by troops. A Marine band played a dirge and Taps sounded, then coffins were lowered amid wreaths and solemn prayers.
Cape Town dispatch reports Methuen on December 27 noting heavy Boer fire south of fon tein and naval brigade actions at Magersfontein. Plan cites British delay and mobile force strategy to besiege Boers while Roberts advances on Bloemfontein. Ladysmith fortifications hold, food adequate for two months, Indian princes offer service, Reesard to join Buller staff, and a Boer prisoner Green captured at Magersfontein.
