London reports a severe reverse at Stormberg where General Gatacre was misled by guides. Casualties include Royal Irish Rifles, Suffolk, Northumberland Fusiliers, Royal Berkshire, and others with 306 noncommissioned officers listed missing. British artillery aided retreat but the defeat sparked public distress and stock-market downturn reflecting political fears.
Report from Modder River Cape Colony describes British artillery fire against Boer positions. A 4.7 inch gun and howitzers engaged, lyddite shells rising brown clouds as the Boers replied with a dozen guns. Boers appear to plan future action at Magersfontein.

Honolulu notes plans to appeal to Congress to void land transfers by the Hawaiian government since annexation. On the steamer America Maru arriving in San Francisco today are F. A. Johnson and A. M. Kent. Kent is detained and wanted in Jamestown New York for embezzlement and forgery. He fled to Japan with actress Marjorie Vinton, who was arrested in San Francisco October 21 as she was boarding a China and Japan liner.
Frankfort Kentucky December 11 The advance crowd of Republican politicians arriving ahead of Governor-elect Taylor’s inauguration tomorrow. It is stated Taylor will not resign as Attorney General, allowing a vacancy to occur and Attorney General elect Pratt will be appointed for the remainder of the term.
