First Gold Discovery Near Virginia City Report
The Reno Journal notes a nugget found near the Comstock lode on June 1, 1850. John Orr and a companion unearthed a roughly one ounce piece with a plain gold band weighing mainly silver content. The find sparked by emigrants traveling to California, using only a butcher knife as a tool. The site later became Gold Gulch, now Silver City, with subsequent mining destroying the gulch.
