Winnemucca Name Origin Tied to Chief Wirnemuces
In Nevada the town Winnemucca bears the name of a Piute chief once called Winamock by locals. A Yale-educated writer recounts how a trapper pair met the chief, who wore one moccasin and left the other bare, inspiring a mixed English Indian name. The district was later named in his honor after miners found gold and silver near the old French bridge on the Humboldt.
