David Rice Atchison of Missouri served the shortest U S term as president pro tempore that led to a one day presidency from March 4 to March 5 1849. The odd timing arose when Polk left office on a Sunday and Taylor took over the next day leaving Atchison briefly in title. He died in 1886 after a long rural life and has counties and cities named for him.
