Key West April 30 reports Admiral Sampson aboard the New York firing on Fort Mariel and silencing its twelve Spanish batteries. The New York also damaged Fort Cabanas west of Havana in fifteen minutes. The Dolphin captured the sloop Lolle this morning.
The German cruiser Irene has been sent from Japan to Manila to protect German interests there. The British consul at Santiago de Cuba has asked that a British warship be sent there. The cruiser Pallas will be sent.
Two Spanish gunboats attempted to slip from Havana harbor last night and were discovered by the Iowa and driven back to port.

Washington April 30 The Senate adopts the conference report on the naval appropriations bill. The House military committee approves raising U S volunteers from 3000 to 13000 with 10000 immunes. Secretary Alger submits deficiency estimates of 3400000000 to cover expenses to July. to be included in the general deficiency bill.
A sailor aboard the United States monitor Puritan has been convicted by drumhead court of treason and sentenced to be shot. The man is a Spaniard with a family at Matanzas and was caught filing a lock off the ship’s magazine.
The naval board of strategy recommends that if the Spanish flotilla does not cross the Atlantic the United States will seize the Canary and Balearic islands as supply bases. If Spain’s fleet stays away from the United States the plan calls for attacking Spain at home to end the war.
San Jose police found no truth in the claim that Spaniards boasted of blowing up the Santa Cruz powder mill. A Spaniard told a friend a Spaniard allegedly tied a pistol to a nitroglycerine tank and pulled the trigger, causing an explosion, but investigators found the tale false.
Santa Cruz April 30 authorities report the remains of another man found near the powder works. They believe the suspicious Spaniard who sought work the day of the explosion died, raising the total killed to thirteen. Two more applicants for work remain missing, though their blankets were located nearby.
Key West on April 30 reports the troop ship Panther arrived from Hampton Roads yesterday, escorted by the Montgomery, with 800 marines aboard. The arrival marks a quiet, orderly transfer as troops land in Florida.
