Elko Nevada April 21 Word from Tasestorm reports a general melee on the Western Shoshone Reservation after Indian agent Mayhagh clashed with a young female teacher seeking her job. A German blacksmith insulted her. she drew a revolver. The reservation doctor shot the German in the side, then Mayhagh was wounded in the head by the doctor. Police fired. several arrests followed. The incident drew in the reservation’s chief police and others, with all involved taken to Mountain City. Mayhagh, long a resident of Elko, had been agent before 1834 and was reappointed by McKinley about a year ago. Names of the teacher, doctor, and German were not learned.
