The Mazet Investigating Committee questioned Croker ally Peter F Meyer about dock boards and city contracts. Meyer avoided new disclosures while Croker sparred with lawyer Moss over finances and potential conflicts with the Manhattan Elevated Railroad and telephone interests. The session adjourned to continue Monday.
The Silver State wire reports April 15 market activity across Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, Denver, and San Francisco. Cattle receipts vary from 75 to 800 head with prices for native beef steers ranging from about 3.75 to 6.00, Texas steers up to 5.60, and sheep receipts around 1,000 with lambs up to 5.60. grain and metal futures show wheat, barley, copper, and lead fluctuating with modest moves.
In Jefferson City on April 15 the House passed the Neabit election bill by enforcing a quorum. When debate on the bill to reform elections in St. Louis and Kansas City arose, some Republicans attempted to leave. Speaker Wood ordered doors closed as the measure was approved.
General John C. Gilmore testified before the Wade Court of Inquiry denying claims that he urged Captain Aspinwall to throw beef overboard from the transport Manitoba during a Ponce harbor incident. In Washington Mr Bartlet Tripp of the Samoan Commission is recalled to receive new instructions.
The trial of Shaw and Bowie continues as 8 H Kitto testifies on signatures and a Burns Oregon cash book. A suspected Bowie signature is challenged by an erasure. Defense witness Frank Baldais is kept on stand after attempting to depart. Many ladies attend the session.
Three freight cars jumped the track near Lovelock at noon blocking the line and delaying an eastbound passenger train until the track was cleared. No further details or delay length were available by 3:80. The freight incident occurred while the passenger was on time.
