An Old Time Railroad West of the Alleghenies
The first railroad west of the Alleghenies ran from Lexington to Frankfort Kentucky in 1831. Engineers built a curved route with two story cars where women and children rode below and men above, four per compartment. Locomotives were not used, mules pulled the cars, and the tender held wood while water was carried in a hogshead. Water was dipped from wells, and two poles with hickory brooms replaced a cowcatcher to sweep the track.
