In Virginia Nevada April 8 a county hospital building burned to ground with one life lost. Firefighters arrived too late and many inmates were rescued after a blaze and an explosion scattered flames through the two story wooden hospital.
Disquieting features of the trouble at Blue fields and the governments stance. The cruiser Detroit left La Guayra bound for Port Costa Rica for Navy instructions as to further cruise. Torres action provokes warship appeal while Zelaya semi endorses collecting duties paid to insurgents. State Department views Bluefields Reyes as de facto, while Nicaragua insists on duty recollection. Graham may not run for Ohio governor per Washington letter.
In northern mining circles exciting claims say a vast gold and copper bearing ore vein lies just beneath the surface near the Voion gold mines. J J Newman, mining engineer, notes the vein runs over half a mile with thickness from thirty to ten feet behind the surface amid intense interest. In other news a would be assassin attacked General Mauseau, the czar's aide, in Moscow. the assailant was captured and the wound not serious. In Cleveland two electricians, Shartlef alias Cooley and Wilson, were arrested for attempting to tap Western Union wires to beat poolrooms.
In Canton on April 8 the George murder trial opened with attorney Welty outlining the case for the defense. He stressed Saxton’s alleged promise to marry Mrs. George and argued threats were misinterpreted. County Surveyor John P Hoover described streets near the crime scene as witnesses were then heard before the jury viewed the site. Court adjourned until Monday.
In San Francisco on April 8, the Associated Press reports that Malie tuo Tame was installed as king on March 12 30d with ceremonies. No fighting has occurred since the rat. The Navy Secretary has received official advices via mail confirming these events.
Colonel William J. Bryan has accepted an invitation to address the Missouri House on the silver question, to be delivered next Tuesday morning after Speaker Ward announced the plan. The report notes state legislative organization and upcoming ballot for senator Panco, with prospects of re-election. Bernard from DC, Charles F. Severson of Hawaii, Otho E. Michaels of Segund US Artillery, Charles H. Mason of Ohio, plus family connections to notable military figures.
The list names several youths with strong military lineage and current service ties. mi A Nichols of California and Henry Kilbourne of Wisconsin are listed among officers and sons of high-ranking military personnel. Frank H Phipps Jr of Pennsylvania and Pennock Rogers of Maryland are noted as U S Army personnel with connections to the Philippines. Alternates include Curtis Carpenter and Hugh Walker among other sons of officers and captains.
The Bay City street railway resumes service on Center Avenue Sussexville and South Bay City lines. A car marked U S Mail runs between Bay City and West Bay City but carries no mail. New motormen and conductors operate the cars, few passengers ride, and striking buses are busier. No major incidents reported.
In St Louis on April 8 a family the Sullivans, including John Sullivan and his daughter Minnie Dunn, died after a meal thought to contain poison. William Sullivan and others were arrested as police investigate a possible homicide or accidental poisoning amid a mystery surrounding the fried eggs and bread supper.
Berlin April The audience of the United States Ambassador Andrew D White with Emperor William lasted nineteen minutes. They discussed Samoa and the peace conference. William asked White to convey thanks to President McKinley for willingness to consider a joint commission and conciliatory assurances from Washington. White conferred again with Baron Von Beulow on Samoa. A number of papers attack Von Beulow's policy. Deutsch Zeitung says if the government does not learn from past months we may cease to be a great power. White and the British Ambassador Lascelles conferred with Beulow on latest Syman developments. Germany urges speedy appointment and dispatch of the commission to prevent further difficulty. Foreign Office official says the action of Americans and British is a violation of the Samoan act. Germany intends to adhere to that view and deems the new Samoa government illegal. USA Embassy denies White used such expression about British influence on the American press as alleged. The story that White charged Britain is fiction.
The Mazet Investigating Committee opened hearings in New York City on April 8 to scrutinize Police Department records. Chief Clerk Kipp was summoned to produce books on Captain Price and past actions by Chief Devery, including orders to shut down gambling and weekly reports.
