William Little aged 58 plus, of Claypool, died Tuesday afternoon following a stroke ten days earlier. He was rational at times and spoke with family about farm work, though left side paralysis limited movement. Survived by wife Elizabeth and nine grown children in nearby towns. Funeral at U B Church Claypool Friday at 10 AM.
Mr and Mrs Ray Henderson celebrate the birth of a baby boy born Monday morning at the McClure residence. The infant’s grandfather Thaddeus C. remarks on his grandson’s healthy appearance and youthfulness as the family enjoys the new arrival.
Mrs. W. L. Rantz and children leave for Belt North Dakota after months visiting relatives in Akron and here. Mrs. Rantz was asked to Akron due to her father John Cliffton’s illness and dress duties.
The W Ferrerdaard family relocated within a week from the Mrs Metzger pro pear to the depot area to the Mrs wn residence on South Jefferson.
A small turnout attended Rally Day at the M. E. Day School where a souvenir was offered for attendees. The event highlighted community participation with local residents sharing memories and plans for future gatherings.
A Beaver Lake event on the bank near Beaver drew about 150 attendees. The social hour and a sumptuous banquet followed. The note promises a similar gathering next year.
Miss Vera Kern will attend the state university this winter in Blooming ton. She was accompanied by her father W H Kern who returned home Tuesday.
Miss Lula Gamble a nurse from Detroit came to her home south of town last week to care for her brother Ora Gamble who underwent an operation for appendicitis Thursday of last week.
Royal K Brown and Ella Alrey wed July 15 1916 at 2 pm in St Joe Michigan with Rev G E Loth officiating. Groom son of O F Brown and employed in Elkhart. bride daughter of Isaac Alrey. They reside at 813 Wolfe Ave Elkhart and began housekeeping two months after the ceremony. Congregation extends congratulations for a long prosperous life.
Hollice Brown has rented the John Craig farm just west of town and will occupy the camp within a couple of weeks. Brown plans to start work on the property soon and will reside there after moving in.
Harry Little of Springfield Ohio visited from Saturday to Tuesday with his uncle William Little who lives north of town and recently suffered a stroke of paralysis ten days ago.
Rey Speicher was in town from Claypool on Monday visiting friends as he prepares to move this week to Twelve Mile where he has been assigned by the recent U B conference.
A Huntington high school trip home from Fort Wayne ended in tragedy when a seven passenger touring car carrying seven boys wrecked south of Fort Wayne. Kenneth Lucas and Paul Swain, both 17, died from neck injuries. Injured were Leo Finn Kendrick Grayston Gerald Hurd Howard Zinn and James McClanahan who was driving. The group had been traveling at about 30 miles per hour.
Mrs Willis Mapie of Glendyke Montana has improved and was moved to a hospital late last week. She will undergo an operation next Thursday. Mrs Mapie is sister to Mrs J W Warburn of this place and Mrs Walburn has been with her in Montana for five weeks and returned home this morning to tend to household duties.
The county requires full registration in seven precincts due to lost voter lists. Only voters who did not register two years ago or who aged into eligibility or changed precincts since then must re register. One day of registration will be held on October 9 with specific precincts listed: Lake 1 and 2, Clay 1 and 2, Seward 1, Van Buren 1, and Jefferson 1.
The record shows multiple births this month. Newborns include a girl to Charles Murphy and wife on September 6, a boy to John Coble and wife on September 7, a boy to Albert Montel and wife on September 8, a girl to A L Lynch and wife on September 14, a girl to Clarence Bechtel and wife on September 14, a girl to Charles Snyder and wife on September 17, and a boy to Ray Henderson and wife on September 18.
Last Friday night frost ended the pickle season at the local salting station. The season yielded a little over twelve thousand five hundred bushels, distributing between seven and eight thousand dollars to farmers in the area over a few months.
Last Saturday the Gresso store in North Manchester opened to a large crowd with twenty eight clerks busy in the afternoon and evening sales. In the forenoon the Silver Lake hand performed a short set as a surprise showing local support. E W Gresso expressed deep appreciation for the band and promised the memory of the gesture will endure. The store rooms have been rebuilt top to bottom creating an almost new building feel.
Mr. and Mrs. A I Kulp of Adel Iowa arrived last Saturday for a visit with Mrs. Catherine Hay, her son J C Hay, and a family member in the area.
The opening football game of the season pits Wabash against South Bend next Sunday. Both teams have trained since August and are described as fast and formidable. Local fans are expected to travel to Wabash for the 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
W W Snake was on our streets Monday. William Little's condition remains about the same. Sabbath school at Center every Sunday at 9:30 everyone invited. Mr Linton busy gathering onion crop on Hathaway farm. Filling silos cutting corn hulling clover seed and sowing wheat is the order of the day. Rev Richhart Mr and Mrs B F Hill and children and Reubin Cline were guests at the Cliak home Sunday.
Congress passes a law signed by President Wilson offering twenty dollars monthly to widows over seventy or wives of soldiers from Civil and Mexican wars. Widows who remarried after the soldier's death regain pension status. divorced widows may qualify if the divorce was due to the husband's misconduct. Widows married before June 27, 1905 are eligible, with guidance available by calling for claim preparation.
Work on the main street sewer commenced Monday morning. Contractor S B Flora will push the project, and with tiles on the ground the sewer can be finished as excavation proceeds.
W. G. Hawley will work for a couple of months on the eighteen room dwelling at the Marvin Ranch near Roann. He will perform carpentry on the Glenwood stock farm project under construction by Mr. Ranch.
Over the past week many residents underwent various surgical procedures and while several well known local figures are affected, all are reported to be recovering well and progressing.
Truman Getty has returned to Warsaw after undergoing tonsil and adenoids removal. He is recovering well and getting along nicely.
Miss Ruby Welrick of Warsaw underwent a nasal operation on Wednesday for a nasal trouble. She is well known for work at the Pearson restaurant last winter. Her friends hope for a swift full recovery.
Miss Edna Harter of Warsaw underwent an appendicitis operation Monday at a Warsaw hospital. She was resting well and it is hoped she will soon fully recover.
Ora Gamble son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Gamble underwent an appendicitis operation last Thursday. The operation was successful and he is recovering well. He had suffered prior attacks and doctors chose surgery to prevent future trouble.
Lizzie Shireman writes from Vancouver Washington September 15 1916 to Silver Lake friends detailing family ties her move through five states and affection for the Redcorp newspaper She notes husband Mr Shireman injured August 30 with hip injury and hospital care while praising Vancouver Portlands proximity and local environsport trains roses and fruit offer a contrast to hospital stay and convey warm regards to friends
A large local turnout traveled to North Manchester last Saturday for the Grosso store opening and made several purchases during the event.
A large crowd gathered Sunday evening at the United Brethren church to hear the opening sermon delivered by O. L. Richhart.
Silver Lake opened Monday with excellent attendance. The primary room reported eighteen pupils entering school for the first time. If all grades cooperate with instructors, Silver Lake will have among the best schools in the state.
Mrs Abraham Smith of Warsaw formerly lived near this place. She visited her daughter Mrs Joe Blodgett near Leesburg Tuesday and one foot was amputated. She has suffered diabetes for years and gangrene in the foot worsened until surgery was needed. Friends extend sympathy and hope for a full recovery.
J C Craig rests here today for Montpelier Ohio where he will remain with his son Orval Craig and family. The people regret his leaving the community and praise him as an excellent citizen.
