Judge Grants New Trial For Railway Clerk In $40 Theft
Judge John T. Baker of the United States District Court grants Melvin Kvite a new trial after a finding of guilt for stealing $40 from registered letters intended for Dona Burdette of Watson Indiana. Kyle's attorney argued the verdict was weak and a compromise, noting the postmistress testified the money package appeared intact before two neighbors testified it was missing. The court suggested the jury erred in judgment and Kvite may be retried under $1,000 bond at the May term.
