Rev Tatman of Akron speaks at 10 30 with the longest Fourth of July day in Silver Lake history expected. Citizens urged to come early and stay all day as storm and heat forecasts warn of hot weather and possible hail later in July and in the Venus period.
Washington Letter from June 24 1901 notes remarks about the Cabinet having eight candidates for the presidency with each member naming a different man. It also covers Secretary Hay's tariff talks with Russia, the Pension Bureau crisis with Commissioner Evans, Indian affairs in Oklahoma, and anecdotes about Governor Pingree and Col Mosby plus a paroled Indiana employment provision.
The Border Land Fourth of July celebration at Stuiver Lake features an open air address by Rev. Tatman of Akron, a special musical program, and a full day of contests and races. Highlights include a sunrise cannon, a ball game, multiple athletic events, and evening fireworks with prizes for winners. There is no entry fee and ample provisions for meals and picnics in the grove.

Indiana operates its indeterminate sentence and parole system uniquely. After April 1, 1897, the two state prisons were merged into the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City, while the Jeffersonville facility was transformed.
