July Fourth passed with minimal fanfare as Silver Lake residents stayed home or aimed for nearby sites like Yellow Creek and the ark. Stores were shut, crowds small, and many people read or visited family while older style fireworks fade and civic groups push for nationwide observance in coming years.
Mr and Mrs Frank Metheny visited their old hometown last Thursday night staying with relatives and friends. Metheny, a college janitor at University Heights, took a two week vacation to return to the area.
George Hudoel sustained a bad bruise to his right foot when he was thrown from a riding plow in a field north of town on Monday. His foot was caught under the machine during the incident.
Mrs and Mrs T J Alspaugh left for Waterloo Iowa last Friday morning for a week's visit with their son Earl Alspaugh and family.
Mrs. Alice Coutt and her daughter Mis from Pomona, California visited last Friday for an extended stay with the Pearson, Underhil, and Smith households in the area.
The Dorcas aid society of the BF church will hold a pastry sale at the Swibart store Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 o'clock.
Ottis Minear was appointed postmaster at Claypool and John Pound at Oswego by the department in Washington. These are the only appointments made in Kosciusko County since the April 18 examination.
George Garvin, 30, son of farmer J W Garvin of near Claypool, is in critical condition in Ft Wayne after ingesting four ounces of chloroform and alcohol Tuesday evening. Found semi conscious, he was treated at police HQ with a stomach pump. He refused to identify himself, asked that his father be notified, and said he was tired of living due to marital troubles while seeking to see his three children.
The dAnfant of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Taylor of Burket escaped a fireball during a Fourth of July crowd scene. A balcony light fell into a baby carriage, igniting the crib and clothing. Two bystanders and the mother acted quickly to save the infant, who remains in serious condition.
Mrs William Thompson residing northwest of town drank carbolic acid after family trouble. Husband had taken baby to the field. she collapsed unconscious but improved after antidote and is recovering. Doctor treated her as she regained consciousness.
Gordon Gresso Adrian Maurer and Russel Self spent last Saturday on the island across the lake enjoying a leisure day. They reportedly had plenty of edibles though rumors claim no fish were caught for the meal.
A large crowd spent the Fourth at the park with many from a distance. Attendees included Mr and Mrs H J Wileb and daughter, Mr and Mrs Carl Haupt, Mr and Mrs J A Worth, Elsie Miller and family, Ross Moore and family, Wood Rhodes wife and daughter, of Wabash, Minn Bowman and family, E E Cochren and family of Sommerset, and H b Nalf and Arthur Bess of Marion.
Rev. Park starts a series of revival meetings at the South Pleasant church three miles south of town next Monday evening July 13. The parish requests everyone who can attend to arrange their participation.
A straw shed is being built onto the Thacker barn one mile east of town. The frame was raised Monday and several from town were present and gave a lift.
Miss Gladys Lawrence and Gus Myers, both of Claypool, married in Michigan on Friday. They spent Friday night with Goshen relatives and Saturday in Chicago. The bride is a daughter of Virgil Lawrence, a former local resident.
The year old son of Mr and Mrs Harley Whitney of just north of Claypool drank kerosene Friday morning and died the next day from the effects.
The Winner class of the M E Sunday School was entertained at the Decker home last Thursday evening July 2. Fourteen guests attended and enjoyed ice cream and cake.
Ezra Beigh of near Sidney has endured an internal abcess for two weeks. The fever from the internal abcess caused typhoid fever symptoms initially, but he is now improving.

Citizens of Sidney to present a petition to the county commissioners requesting incorporation. A vote to determine the town's status likely will be set, with Thursday July 23 as the proposed election day.
Mrs. W. Holden and daughter Pearl of Hammond and Grant Holden of Elgin Illinois visited their mother at the William Johnson home southwest of town last week. On the evening of the 4th a lawn social was held for the guests with flags lanterns and fireworks. Ice cream and cake were served and guests enjoyed a pleasant evening.
Mrs Hazel Bloom was brought from the hospital in Fort Wayne last Friday to her home in Claypool. She stood the trip exceedingly well and is rapidly improving.

The Royal Messenger service, famed for secrecy, carried varied consignments including shirts hats oysters and knickknacks to embassies in Paris Vienna and Berlin during Victoria's era.

Joseph Mort celebrated his 89th birthday with a family gathering at the old home place six miles east of here. All nine children and forty grandchildren attended a banquet hosted by his daughter Mrs. Birch. The next reunion will be held at son Jacob Mort’s home nine miles east of Silver Lake.
Members from the Mazda class Sunday School and families, about forty five people, gathered at the lake Wednesday evening for a six o'clock fish supper. A monster batch of fish was prepared and only a few were left afterward.
Lawrance Alspaugh residing north of Barket visited town Monday to attend business matters and renewed his RECORD subscription at the office. He seldom returns to Silver Lake, traveling north-west.
Reed and family from North Manchester are camping at Lake Charles and occupying a lake cottage this week.
Charlie Howard and his wife from Delphos Ohio along with Roy Howard from Kokomo plan a two week stay at the park. The family travels together on vacation.
Mr and Mrs Kynaston Mr and Mrs Jin Mr and Mrs Conkling and Woodford all of Fort Me Here arrive Saturday for a week long stay at Myrtle Glenn hotel.
In Warsaw Georgia the auditor's office prepares to open sealed bids for the 1 mile Gresso road using gravel and macadam. The Record went to press early and did not publish bid counts amounts or award status. If awarded, work may start by next week with completion hoped before snow.
Rantz Snoberger, and his father I. Ui Snoberger and family, visited his grandmother Mrs Mary Snoberger last week. He has been attending a School of dentistry in Chicago and is now enjoying a vacation with relatives.
Frantz and Carter shipped twenty head of extra fine steers to Buffalo last Saturday. The cattle cost 32240 in total, averaging $112 per head. Purchased from Ivan Tucker near Barket. Mr Frantz accompanied the shipment and returned home yesterday.
J P Homman presides and urges all Endeavorers and Christian workers to attend Sunday Eve services. The program features scriptural songs and recitations from Psalms 150 Exodus 15 1 2 Luke 2 8 14 Matthew 26 26 30 and Revelation 14 1 3 alluding to music in heaven and the creation deliverance and birth of Christ.
