In a special election the proposal to erect a memorial hospital was defeated 3894 to 1002, with Warsaw 601 for and 240 against while Winona Lake favored the proposition about 43 to 1. Outside Warsaw and Winona Lake the outcome was strongly against the hospital across townships.
Drs. J. C. and Edward Hay attended the district meeting of the dental association in South Bend on Monday. They heard an excellent address by Dr. Welland of Iowa City and all members enjoyed a banquet at the Oliver hotel after the meeting.
Mrs F E Swihart and her daughter Marion visited Roann last Saturday for the funeral of Mrs Dr Swihart. The deceased had Brights disease and recently undergone an operation but passed away after a prolonged illness.
Akron druggist Hl. Bert Hossman, a well known local figure, has been seriously ill for several weeks and confined to a Rochester hospital.
Ray Henderson spent several days in Toledo this week attending a convention of Delco-Light agents.
Three Sidney youths Blaiy Paulus and Eugene and Vern Ross narrowly escaped instant death when their car crashed into a moving freight train last Thursday evening. The force of the collision turned the vehicle around and smashed the front end, tossing all occupants from the car with only minor injuries.
Grandma Chapman, visiting at her daughter Mrs. Harmon Drudge's home at the town's west edge, has been confined to her room for several days and threatened with pneumonia.
County Assessor Clark Hatfield appoints Joan F. Skinner to fill the unexpired term of the late Martin B. Kline in Lake township. Skinner will begin duties promptly on March 1.
A big supper and entertainment are set for next Saturday evening at the Palestine Methodist church. Speakers George Nye and Wilbur Gill will headline with a musical program. County residents are invited, with soldiers and sailors of the world and other wars as guests of honor.
Albert Tucker died at his Mentone home after several months illness due to age and complications. He was nearly 89 and survived by three sons Ora Charles and Norman and many relatives. Funeral services were held in Mentone on Tuesday with a large procession of mourners.
Mr and Mrs McGlennen have rented the Roy Bridge property on Poplar Street and plan to occupy the premises.

Public sale announced by Ben Jontz at his southwest town farm on Tuesday January 20 at 10:00. He will vacate the home farm late next month and move west of Mentone. The home farm has been sold to Charles Zimmerman who will occupy the Carter place just east of town.
Police in many towns announce the middle of this month as the last date for 1919 license plate machines to run. New numbers must be in place or drivers will be arrested. Officers have been lenient before, but autoists should act now to avoid penalties.
Three boys from Rose Hill narrowly escaped death at the Big Four crossing in North Manchester last Saturday evening. Their car stalled near the track as a northbound freight train approached, striking the vehicle and tearing off the radiator and causing damage.

Rev W Roy Columbus his wife and son Robert along with Henry Newman his wife and daughters Helen and Alice attended the weekly Methodist church gathering in Rantoul New Year’s evening. Children roller skated from 4 to 5 30 p m. Supper for 250 was served and cleared in 35 minutes. Devotional services followed led by Rev Heinen. A ten piece orchestra then played with a film shown. The weekly feature is praised as a key Christian social service for Paxton people and the Rantoul community.
The H. B. Swibart family living three and a half miles south of here plan to leave within weeks. Mr Swibart has sold land to Charles Smith who lives northeast of the area and Smith has bought a sixty acre farm about six miles north of Goshen.
Hugo Gemmer spent eight hours waiting for a train during a business visit in Warsaw on Monday afternoon. He returned home after the lengthy delay.
Mr and Mrs J A Ramsey depart Thursday morning for Cumberland Maryland to visit their daughter Audrey Cockrel and her husband for a couple of weeks.
The domestic science class of the first year high school entertained Supt. Cline and wife, Principal Barr, Trustee Clymer and other instructors to dinner last Saturday in the high school building. The cats were excellent and all present had a very good time.
Albert Perry and the Bucher boys captured a prairie wolf southwest of town after a long chase on Friday. They brought the animal to town Saturday evening for display in several businesses before it was shot following a short run.

Samuel Haney of North Manchester died in Anniston Alabama on Friday night. He was over 70 and is survived by his wife two daughters two sisters Mrs D W Kreisher and Mrs Louise Reed of North Manchester and three brothers Hiram Jacob and John Haney. He had lived in Silver Lake for many years and visited here last fall. Funeral was held in Anniston.
The Silver Lake high school basketball team faces Burket high school in a Friday evening game on January 16, 1920. Tip is at 7 45 with admission set at 15 cents. Come and root for the home team.
Workmen started Monday installing a heating system in the garage and the project will take some time to finish.
Jesse Bainter living northwest of here attended to business in North Manchester last Saturday and will relocate to the Hay farm north of that town within a couple of months.
Mrs J W Ferrerda and her son Lore returned home last week from Chicago after a three week visit with her mother Mrs Thomas McCormick and her husband.
Mrs Jaques, who has been ill for several weeks, is reported to be much improved and officials hope she will be able to move about again soon.
Indiana's state highway system, 3156 miles long, will be officially designated by the State Highway Commission before April 1. The plan covers every county seat and major city, with maintenance to fall to the commission. The Wabash to Goshen route follows the Dixie Highway.
Miss Freda Tucker, one of the instructors in our school, grew quite sick Monday and was taken to her home east of town.
