A Big Four passenger train derailed after hitting an open switch near Kelley Ax Works north of Alexandria. Engineer John Crites was killed instantly, fireman William Gates seriously injured, and passenger J. M. Bloomer reported all other riders shaken but unharmed. Investigators will seek blame.
Saturday night Elba Witters, about fourteen, died instantly on his father’s farm three miles southwest of Silver Lake when his head was crushed between a stake and the grinder sweep. He was a bright high school pupil, and his death shocked the community. Mr. Pease of Goshen’s Pease Gasoline Engine Co. was in town recently.
