The Indiana Senate approved a statewide liquor prohibition bill by 38 to 11. It prohibits manufacture and sale after April 1 1918 with limited exceptions for sacramental wine and home wine or cider for personal use. Dealers face strict enforcement and the measure awaits governor signature or veto.
The regular monthly meeting of the county board of education was held Monday with trustees Paulus and Hill in attendance in Warsaw.
E. B. Jones of Mentone has assumed control of the dray line after purchasing it a couple of months ago. He plans to relocate with his family as Helser settles his next venture. Helser has not yet decided his future plans.
Mrs Leonard Dickey of Cparents of a baby was named at Barn Ey. She formerly owned this place and now resides at a new location.
In Noble, Lagrange and Stuben counties C J Munton was elected to succeed the late Dr W T Green who died recently. He will take his seat immediately and serve the unexpired term and the 1919 general assembly in the state senate.
Max and Roscoe Hurd of Elwood visited several days this week after their large truck carrying goods broke down near the Lando Kiine place southwest of town. They remained for repairs before continuing to a nearby farm.
The firm of Rager and Jantz dissolved their partnership on Tuesday and Mr. Rager will continue the business. The store began in 1905 when H. P. Rager opened it, later moving to the present location. In 1912 Rager sold half to Budd Jantz. the community regrets the split but wishes them success in future ventures.
Entertained members of the Embroidery club gathered Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. S. B. Burdge for a social event.
Mrs Nellie Henderson entertained members of the Mothers club at her home last Friday. The ST club members were entertained at the Marion Swihart home last Friday evening.
Miss Maxine Snyder entertained members of the P. D. club at her home last Saturday night, providing hospitality and conversation for the group.
The past week saw temperatures drop to twelve to fifteen below zero last Friday and hover near zero for four days. By Tuesday the mercury began to rise but forecasts warn of more cold blustery days before winter ends.
Revival at the Methodist church continues with six weeks of services. Attendance has been strong and 25 to 30 conversions have occurred. A Thursday evening service is planned and the meeting may extend through Sunday.
The remark argues that nobody is flawless and that we should extend the same patient, forgiving affection to friends as we expect for ourselves. It emphasizes self-acceptance and mutual kindness despite faults.
The Harvey family and Meredith have relocated to a farm southwest of town. Neighbors express warm wishes for happiness and success in their new rural residence.
Abed couple wed in Rochester on January 31 after obtaining a marriage license. W. D. Whittenberger, 80, and Mary Teeter, 12, both of Akron, were joined in matrimony with a minister in attendance. Teeter is the step-mother of Mrs. A. M. Carr who lives north of Leupp.
Jesse Helser aged 67 died at his Warsaw home after an illness since last August including paralysis and Bright's disease. A resident 55 years, he leaves a son, a daughter, three sisters and a brother George W. Helser who lives southwest of town. The funeral was held in Warsaw this Thursday afternoon.
Last Friday marked Groundhog Day as the prophesy forecast stirred mixed reactions. Observers noted the public’s lukewarm reception to the forecast and the ongoing debate over its accuracy and significance.
The K of P lodge conferred the rank of Knight on H. E. Myers and Arley King on Monday evening. A luncheon and smoker followed for about thirty members. Short talks filled the session with a rollicking Irish song by Pat Murphy. Lakeview lodge No 164 turns thirty on Feb 21 1917 and plans commemorations.
Teachers institutes occur every four weeks and the sixth for this school year will be held Saturday in the school building. The program is given elsewhere in this issue. Patrons who cannot attend during school days are urged to arrange to visit the institute Saturday to gain benefit from the various numbers.
Dr William J Solt trustee for the township housing San Pierre in Starke county lost his residence and office in a large blaze that destroyed the entire building and most contents. The second story housed both his medical practice and trusteeship.
Monday afternoon in Warsaw Rev. A G Neak united Miss Gladys Haney of Warsaw and Arthur Hamilton of North Manchester in marriage. The couple went to North Manchester where a furnished house awaits them as their future home.
A coal oil heating stove exploded at the Charles Lindzy residence southeast of town last Saturday morning. The blast started a fire that spread through a basement and a partition before neighbors and Mrs. Lindzy quenched the flames. Mrs. Lindzy sustained a deep gash on her right hand from an ax blade while aiding her husband, needing five stitches. The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
Attended wedding O R Glatz and Miss Iva McKrill were in Warsaw Monday and were present at the marriage of Arthur Hamilton and Gladys Janey.
Experience difficulty marked by rural carriers over several days as cold weather hampers routes and makes Monday roads nearly impassable in places.
Last Friday was the season’s coldest day with many travelers feeling severe chills. School children riding in hacks endured the cold, though coal heaters kept the rigs warm for most riders.
Three Seward school hack drivers overfilled coal heaters causing fires near the wagons about a half mile from the school. Flames were extinguished with minor damage as children finished the mile walk in subzero cold, unprepared for the bitter morning.
