Milly Espinosa of Cobre High School was named Girl of the Month by the Chaparral Business and Professional Women of Bayard. She is vice president of Future Journalists of America and editor of The War Whoop, plans to major in journalism at Western New Mexico University.

Madrid obit notes rosary and funeral in Hurley area

Luis M. Madrid dies Monday in Madrid area with a rosary at Curtis Bright Funeral Chapel Tuesday night and Mass at Infant Jesus Church Hurley Wednesday morning. Interment in Hurley Cemetery follows. he is survived by five sisters three brothers and his mother. Penny Elizabeth Seebeck infant daughter of Gregory and Mrs Seebeck dies Monday with a graveside service Wednesday at Memory Lane Cemetery officiated by Bishop Earl Young.

Hospitals Board Approves 1972 73 Budget Plan

The State Hospitals and Institutions Board approved a $13.5 million operating budget for 1972 73, up from the current year by about $14 million in total. It deferred a $650,000 capital outlay request and noted Medicaid driven funding shifts may affect the next year’s plan. The budget anticipates $2.1 million in federal Medicaid Medicare payments and adds staff across several facilities including Fort Bayard, Los Lunas, Fort Stanton and Villa Solano.

Arthur E Day Named County Coordinator

Arthur E Day of Silver City was appointed Alcoholism Treatment Program Coordinator for Grant and Catron counties. The post, an external stop of services from the Southwest Mental Health Center in Las Cruces, aims to improve access to mental health services in the two counties. Day will serve as a referral source around October 18, with office location and schedule to be announced. He is married, a Silver City homeowner, and a graduate of Western New Mexico University.

The Newcomers Club hosted its annual fall coffee at Mrs. Jack Rein’s home with co hostess Mrs. Frank Roberts. About 37 guests attended between 10 and 12 am as decor featured a fall motif and name tags showed autumn leaves.

Parents of children enrolled in El Grito Head Start gathered at the Head Start Center in Bliver City for a gut acquainted meeting. Mrs. Elizabeth Delgado welcomed attendees and Pristila Vega spoke on parent participation and volunteering. Cadet Hill Completes ROTC Field Training at Eglin AFB

Thomas D. Hill Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Thomas D Hull of Silver City, completed a four week ROTC field training encampment at Eglin AFB Florida. Cadets learned life on Air Force bases and explored potential officer career fields while undergoing survival training aircraft and aircrew indoctrination and visits to bases. Hill, a 1973 construction student at Texas A&M, returns to campus after the program.
