An unofficial tally shows 13,493 Americans killed and 94,877 wounded in Vietnam, totaling 108,370 casualties to date. Weekly U.S. losses rose to 123 dead and 1,434 wounded, with South Vietnamese and allied tolls also reported, amid continued shelling near the DMZ.
About 50 small businessmen and community leaders attended a program in Silver City shown opportunities for small business loans. Hosted by Grant County Technical Action Panel, chaired by Bob Abercrombie, with speakers Don Purcel and Waylon Nelson outlining loan eligibility and access via SBA programs.
Margaret Crowe Rogers a former resident who lived in El Paso Texas the last 15 years died there Wednesday Her husband Richard P Rogers and two sons Thomas and Richard L Rogers, all of El Paso, survive along with two grandchildren a sister Virginia E Mee Lechnie of Toronto and a brother Tom Crowe of Little Rock The funeral is 2 p.m. Friday at Meneely Presbyterian Church in El Paso under Easter Maxon Funeral Home direction.

AP reports authorities traced the deadly insecticide Parathion to a warehouse supplying bakery products in Tijuana. About 16 people died, mostly children under 10, with 25 hospitalized and 600 treated or released. One hundred fifty bakeries were padlocked and guarded. 35 people tied to supplier and bakeries held for questioning.
Paul Ragle announces the completion of a large earth moving job along Silver Heights Blvd near Hillcrest Hospital and the new Cliff highway. The work, ongoing for over a year, has removed thousands of cubic yards of earth creating prime commercial land for future developments and potential fighter-class establishments seeking building sites along highways east and south of the hospital. Concrete surfacing beneath exposed rock near the Hillcrest Hospital is reported completed as far as possible.
In Dallas a small plane crash killed two aerospace workers and five military pilots as it plowed into Bradfield Elementary, narrowly missing pupils due to a faculty meeting day. The Ling-Temco-Vought Electrosystems shuttle, from Greenville to Love Field, spiraled down near the band hall, hitting bike racks and a wall, with one passing car driver unharmed.
Sen. Carl Hayden seeks to amend the public works bill to authorize the Central Arizona Project amid a clash with Rep. Wayne Aspinall over Colorado River development. The vote on advancing the move stood 18 to 5 in committee as debate centered on who controls funding and authorization for water projects in Arizona and Colorado.
Washington AP Sen Clinton Anderson and Sen Joseph Montoya proposed amendments to extend the life of the Office of Economic Opportunity. The measures would allow OEO Director Sargent Shriver to remove undesirable local anti poverty staff, require CAP directors to broaden service areas, mandate a quorum for CAP board actions, and ensure one third of CAP board members are elected officials or community leaders. The GOP amendment to move Head Start to the Office of Education failed 54 to 35, seen as a win for administration forces maintaining the War on Poverty program. The Senate will continue debate with no final passage expected soon.
Frontier Airlines seeks an international Albuquerque route to Mexican coastal resort centers Guaymas Mazatlan La Paz and Puerto Vallarta with El Paso as a prior jumping off point. The carrier cites a diplomatic notes exchange between the U S ambassador to Mexico and Mexico s foreign relations minister as context for linking Albuquerque as the terminal city.
Former State Sen. Fabian Chavez will work on proposed legislation to create a state labor department. The Governor's Committee on Reorganization of State Government backed the plan on Wednesday and will hold weekly meetings until a report for Governor Davie Cargo and the legislature is finished.
SALT LAKE CITY AP A high official of United Steelworkers invited by Governor Rampton plans a summit on the copper strike now in its 76th day. International VP Joseph Malony said all unions would send reps to the meeting in the governor’s office Monday. Kennecott president Frank Milliken declined saying Salt Lake City officials have authority to conduct meaningful negotiations.
