Pilot Plant Aims to Cut Copper Smelter Emissions
American Smelting and Re lining Company and Phelps Dodge inaugurated a $1.7 million pilot plant at Asarco El Paso to test turning sulfur dioxide in smelter gases into elemental sulfur. The venture, tested at Asarco labs in South Plainfield, aims to reduce emissions, with potential for large scale use and sulfur as a easier to store product than sulfuric acid.
