A welders torch Sunday night started a fire aboard the aircraft carrier Wasp as it lay in drydock for overhaul. Capt. Harold G. Bradshaw said the blaze confined to insulation in the combat information center amidships. Fireman Dennis Heubner of Chicago, 20, suffered smoke inhalation while on watch. About 500 of the ship’s 2,000 crew were aboard when the fire occurred.

Richard Lara age 9 was found safe after a night long search in Bayard. Bayard police officers with Grant County sheriff s deputies Hurley police New Mexico Mounted Patrol and volunteers located him in an abandoned house near the Grant County Bank Building. He had been reported missing at about 6 30 p m. The search ended about 7 30 a m with thanks to Sheriff Steve Ray Aguirre and all involved.
