Silver Grad Named To NMSU Board

Michael M. Grijalva of Silver City has been selected to the Business Administration and Economics Council at New Mexico State University. The council includes two reps from each organization in the College of Business, the student senator, and three at large members. Grijalva, a junior accounting major, is a student senator and Silver City High School graduate.

Town and Country Family Reunion and Local Visits

Town and Country residents joined a Vaughan family reunion at Caddo Lake in east Texas after trips to Hughes Split and Hughes Springs. Visitors included John McKennon of Santa Ana California, former Silver City resident, and Betty Peel wife of Dr. D F Peel of Western New Mexico University who underwent surgery in El Paso after burns from a defective kiln.

Local Men Back with Army Program in Grant County

SP 4 Sammy Padilla and SP 4 Armando Macias return to Grant County to aid Modern Volunteer Army recruitment. SFC Baraten Edmonds Jr. praises them as outstanding local men. Both are stationed in Europe. Padilla with TRANSCOM in Oberusel Germany and Macias with 5081 Field Artillery in Wiesbaden. Padilla enlisted December 1971 and is a Silver High School graduate. UNM Names Silver Girl as Residence Hall Advisor

Pat Mellyenna, a third year psychology major and daughter of Mr and Mrs James R Mell yenna of Silver City, is appointed to the University of New Mexico residence hall staff. As advisor she directs new students to resources and assists the assistant dean of students for housing.

Brubaker Named to Acapella Choir at Ricks College

Hurley resident Cal Brubaker, son of Mr and Mrs Joe Brubaker, earns a place in the select Acapella Choir at Ricks College Rexburg Idaho amid a 66 member choir selection.

Calendar of Coming Events at Silver City

The Silver City Daily Press lists community notices for free publication. An organization meeting of the Silver High Booster club is set for 7 30 p m Wednesday Nov 1 in the school library. Hurley Lodge 55 AF and AM meets at 7 30 p m Thursday for entered apprentice degree. A family potluck is planned 6 30 p m Friday at Bayard Methodist Fellowship Hall for World Community Day with green chili casserole beans rolls and drinks. Pony Express ride aims to beat postal service to Washington

James H. Boren, author of When In Doubt Mumble, starts on horseback from Independence Mall with five riders and two relief horses to prove Pony Express speed. They carry Ford addressed letters to Congress, duplicate copies mailed, expect to reach Washington by noon. Post office declines comment.

Hillcrest Auxiliary awards prizes for nursery project

Mrs. Lacy Duncan and Mrs. W J Laney won first and second prizes in the Hillcrest Auxiliary funds project. Proceeds go to buy a defibrillator for Hillcrest General Hospital. Miss Ruby Tannehill crocheted the baby afghan and Mrs. Wesley Reese painted nursery rhyme blocks and made the quilt.

DeMolays Attend Ceremonies In Alamogordo

A Gila Chapter DeMolay group led by Philip Welsh and Miles Godby attended initiation ceremonies and the J Edgar Hoover Memorial Degrees in Alamogordo. Local Masons Maurice Conner William E Frazier Clifton L Reed supported the event hosted by the Alamogordo DeMolay Chapter. Charles Martin of Roswell and C L Reed of Silver City received the honorary Legion of Honor in DeMolay.

Plan booster aims to scan Halloween treats in Albuquerque

Steve Cicconi a UNM sophomore from Boston arranged metal detection stations at Albuquerque shopping centers for Halloween to detect razor blades or metal in candy. He cautioned readings won’t be 100 percent but will be as accurate as possible and cited a prior case of a child dying from a razor blade in fruit.

Audubon Society Meets Friday in Western New Mexico

The Southwestern New Mexico Audubon Society will meet Friday at 7 30 p m in the science building on Western New Mexico University salty campus. A brief report on the Rockport Tex Southwest Regional Workshop held Oct 25 and 22 will be presented by local participants. Colored slides of area birds and their calls will be shown by Mr and Mrs Stuart O Byrne, plus travel slides from Afghanistan and Bolivia by Mr and Mrs Sterling Garwood. Mrs Elwa Estes of Cliff will show Mexican plants and birds. Mrs Marian Jenness hosts the social hour. Public invited.
