Mining leaders urge national minerals policy and cabinet status

At a joint New Mexico Mining Association and International Mining Days meeting in Paso, Jack M. Ehrhorn urged creating a national minerals policy and a Department of Minerals with cabinet status. James J. Craig was named NMMA president, with John Wright and Frank Woodruff as first and second vice presidents, and a slate of directors announced including J J Conley and Gaylord Cudney among others.

The United States proposes handing over rival U.S. and Soviet draft treaties to a 17 nation Geneva committee to control steps toward halting nuclear weapons spread. President Johnson signs a $2 billion public works bill but signals veto over a clause allowing congressional committees to block certain projects. House investigators avoid engaging with Robert Shelton's allegations as to their conduct. Viet Cong attacks persist on the Plei Me camp amid heavy air strikes and U.S. supported Vietnamese reinforcements.

U.S. Advisers Hold Pleiku Siege at Plei Me Camp

At Plei Me in Pleiku province a Viet Cong assault against the camp persists as South Vietnamese battalions with tanks and U.S. artillery extend the siege. Capt Harald Moore reports nearly half of 12 American casualties, one man killed in a machine gun position, and two U.S. Air Force jets and two Skyraiders shot down. A helicopter crash kills eight American crew.

Camp Under Fire: Viet Cong Attack Thins Defenders

Moore reports that Viet Cong shelled the Pleiku camp with machine-gun fire and mortars. One American killed, three Montagnard aides and U.S. advisers led a bold assault to disable a gun position, while two sergeants restored radio links after antenna damage. Casualties were described as very light.
