Serna and Assistant District Attorney William Martin explained the new Mexico worthless checks laws at a Silver City Grant County Board meeting. They outlined the criminal offenses versus simple bad faith cases and answered questions from merchants and professionals.
New York AP bulletin reports General Electric and the United Electrical Workers union reached a tentative agreement today on changes to their national contract. The deal involves the largest independent union at GE, outlining modifications expected to affect work terms and conditions.

Silver City Fire Department responded to Arenas Valley at 12 41 p m today with a spokesman saying the fire is pretty well underway and not yet under control as the paper went to press.
Honolulu AP report notes a tidal wave alert issued after a Peru earthquake. Coast Guard lifted the alert after four hours as no wave materialized. President and Mrs. Johnson in Honolulu remained undisturbed during the Pacific trip.
The Silver City Town Council postponed buying a front end loader pending bid specs from three bidders with net bids from 21 27692 to 10 346. They accepted Civil Defense director Andrew Haugland's resignation for personal reasons and delayed naming a replacement. Meg Ridling appealed for lower speed limits on Highway 180 near the eastern annexed area, fearing his business sign may mislead drivers into speeding on a proposed speedway.
Regional Director Daniel B. Beard presented Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument employees with a 1985 safety award for no disabling injuries no motor vehicle accidents and no structural fires during the year. The citation highlighted excellent safety performance by the staff.

Robert H. Sprecher 47, local attorney and partner in Foy and Sprecher, died suddenly at his Silver City home. Born in Deming and a New Mexico native, he moved from Roswell where he served as assistant district attorney for 10 years. He served in the Navy in World War II and later pursued music careers before settling in Silver City.
