Promoters continued with plans for another series of nationwide demonstrations on Navy day November 6 or November 13. In Saigon Spec. 4 Russell D. Miller of Manassas Virginia dismissed the protests saying the demonstrators are crazy and he questions their understanding.
U S Attorney General Katzenbach says the Justice Department is probing Civil disobedience linked to the Students for a Democratic Society amid nationwide demonstrations from New Haven to Hawaii. Police report fights in New York and a draft card burning in Rochester. Wisconsin Governor Knowles condemns the protests at Truax Air Base and a Philadelphia group holds a prayer march for Vietnam policy.
Dirksen and Mansfield say adjournment possible if major bills move fast. A $421 billion appropriation bill for anti poverty and land projects passed the House and heads to the Senate for early action, pushing total annual appropriations toward a record near $120 billion. A $841.4 million federal pay raise awaits Senate approval after House passage of a $1.55 billion increase and Johnson seeking $400 million.
A national protest against government policy led to two days of anti-U.S. demonstrations and counter-picketing at City Hall, the University of Pennsylvania, and a Boeing plant in Morton, Pennsylvania, known for helicopter production used in Viet Nam.
Five U S planes faced Soviet missiles and heavy ground fire during raids north of Hanoi and near Haiphong. Two F4 Phantoms were shot down and one crashed. four parachuted survivors were seen on the ground. Marines lost two near Da Nang with eight escaped injury. Viet Cong attacks near Saigon caused casualties and Marines killed three militants in clashes.
State Police reported two Albuquerque women died when their car hit a truck trailer on 0 S 64 B4 285 near Espanola. Passengers in the Saiz vehicle escaped with minor injuries. Other deaths included George J Smith in Albuquerque after a skid and crash on 2 rainslick Street, Sherry Hickman in Truth or Consequences after a mother driven car overturned on 0 S 60 west of Fort Sumner, and James Jones in Deming after a gasoline tanker collision on U S 70 80 west of Las Cruces.
Utica College students voted 31 to permit alcoholic beverages on campus. A student spokesman said the results would be used to persuade Syracuse University to lift its no alcohol policy on campus.
