Ford and the United Auto Workers press for a contract amid a news blackout. Walter Beuther and Malcolm Luiste lead bargaining as 160000 workers face ongoing strikes with wage-cost concerns and early September sales lagging.
More than 950 union members at Anaconda's Twin Buttes Mine south of Tucson voted Sunday night against a strike. Workers will continue on a days to days basis while Anaconda negotiates with about 3,000 strikers at Butte, Montana. Production not expected until late next year.
City officials announce the installation of 12 minute parking meters in downtown locations on corners to speed turnover in heavy traffic. Meters will be marked dial showing 12 minutes and mounted on green poles. Installation is experimental with more units planned.
Democratic and Republican governors say President Johnson will not receive a unified endorsement for Vietnam policy during the Governors Conference voyage aboard the Independence. Governors Romney Reagan Rhodes and others debate timing and unity as party divisions linger over the war stance.
Washington Interior Committee Chairman Aspinall and Rep. Saylor seek equitable Colorado River policy for CAP and Upper Basin projects. They urge cooperation with Colorado, Arizona, and California leaders to craft pending legislation and address future water shortages. Banks foresees saline water research aiding interim relief.
Graveside services for Tana Kay Spurgeon infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Spurgeon were held Oct. 8 at Reserve Cemetery after dying Oct. 6 in Socorro General Hospital. The casket lay in state at Reserve Community Presbyterian Church from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Survivors include a nine year old brother Leonard Deane a six year old sister Stenia Sue and grandparents Roy Hobbs Horace Spurg esn at Reserve.
Silver City town council plans a short meeting at city hall at 7 p.m. The agenda lists two items including proposed changes in the city code for licensing dances and discussion of water and sewer issues on 20th Street east of Silver Street.

A searing brush fire near Chatsworth northwest of Los Angeles left one dead and gutted 26 homes with about 100 more threatened on hillsides. Two fires burned a 20 to 28 mile perimeter along U.S. 101, totaling tens of thousands of acres with 1,000 firefighters amid hot winds. Janet Cameron was killed when a fire truck collided with her car. several others injured as fires spread toward Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks.
The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce board of directors will meet at 7 a.m. Tuesday in the downstairs meeting room of the Drifter Inn.
