Use disease free stock plant in clean soil discard rotted bulbs divide iris discard nematode affected rhizomes apply nematicides and fungicides follow label directions and fumigate diseased beds with Vapam Mylone or formaldehyde with care.

LBJ backs 10 percent Social Security raise in 1968 plan
President Johnson urged Congress to act next year on a 10 per cent average boost in Social Security benefits totaling at least 2.2 billion dollars annually starting January 1, 1968. The proposal would raise the average pension by 8.50 dollars per month and set a minimum monthly check at 100 dollars, up from 14 dollars for those with 25 years of coverage. Republicans urged immediate action, calling for delaying adjournment. The plan sparked political one upmanship ahead of elections as Rep. Byrnes warned of a 7 per cent cost of living gap in retirees’ income. Other items include New Mexico cotton acreage allotments and 1966 grain sorghum and pea-nut crop estimates.

Film On New Reading Method Shown Thursday
A 40 minute film titled Forty Sounds of English will be shown at 7 30 p.m. Thursday in the multipurpose room of the Teacher Education Center at 12th and Virginia Streets in Silver City. The event introduces the International Teaching Alphabet ITA a reading method developed in England now in use for two years at the center where pupils read books and write reports at higher levels than their age. Librarian Mrs Helen Lynch notes first graders wrote their own reports this summer the first time she recalls such achievement. Public invited to view the film and see how ITA is taught.
