In a Grant County courtroom the trial continued with three witnesses recounting the crash involving Provencio and others. Officer Bencomo described finding Provencio conscious but incoherent and Valles unconscious at the left side collision site between Bayard and Vanadium. Trevizo testified the death car stayed on the right before Provencio’s big car crossed the curve and struck the smaller vehicle, then impacted Trevizo’s car. Cordero noted Provencio’s earlier report of a stolen car and described Provencio’s appearance as not drunk, with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. The judge adjourned until 1 pm and allowed jurors to lunch separately.
In Roswell AP report St John son of Roswell was elected Tuesday president of the Southeast New Mexico Grazing Association, succeeding Lawrence Marchant of Carlsbad.
UAW and Chrysler representatives labored around the clock to avert a possible second nationwide auto strike this year. More than 6,000 Chrysler workers walked off at five plants, including Sterling stamping and Trenton engine in Detroit, while others delayed by contract disputes. Walter P. Reuther and John D. Leary led negotiations for 103,000 workers as talks continued since Tuesday morning.
Noel Rankin was named president of the Grant County Farm Bureau at the Silver City Local annual banquet held at the Veterans Center. Sam Reed and W.R. Biebelle were elected first and second vice presidents with Ruth Martin as secretary and Otto Prevost treasurer. Beth Graham chairs. Bob Porter praised Rankin for 16 years of service as he received a standing ovation.
Cincinnati judge convicts Gary Epperly, 29, of making unnecessary noise and places him on three months probation. Epperly must lower the loudspeaker volume or stop preaching in the busy market area.
