Aztec Airlines Quits Service to Silver City

Aztec Airlines of El Paso announced it will not resume operations. The carrier had started daily service to Silver City in September 1956 and had planned to resume June with new backing. A meeting with Silver City Town Council was scheduled tonight.

Safety Experts Fear Memorial Day Holiday Traffic Death Record

CHICAGO AP Traffic accidents over the Memorial Day weekend could set a new record as four days raise total deaths toward 650 to 750. Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council notes 352 deaths so far, with higher totals expected, reflecting more drivers on highways and urging stronger safety programs. The deadliest three day high was 720 in 1985, with last year’s four day tally at 542. boating drownings total 25.

Mounted Patrol Roadblock To Aid Fatigue Prevention

New Mexico Mounted Patrol troop eight and New Mexico State Police plan a roadblock Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the City of Rocks turnoff on Highway 61 and U.S. 180. Volunteers will offer coffee milk and soft drinks to motorists to combat fatigue and allow a short stretch break, with drinks donated by local merchants.

Man Shot In Silver City Home

George Whitten aged 68 of 1400 Georgia Street, Silver City, was shot at his home around 6 pm and admitted to Hillcrest General Hospital with a bullet entering his left side below the ribs and exiting his neck. Police found a .38 revolver in the front yard and five empty cartridges. no charges filed as investigation proceeds.

Fire Destroys Times' Building In Silver City

Flames from a gas heater gutted the El Paso Times warehouse between Bullard and Eighth Streets in Silver City this morning. Fire Chief Luis Martinez said a route boy lit the heater to warm up. The blaze, reported at 6:20 a.m., left the building a total loss with no dollar estimate yet. five volunteers and one regular responded.

Graveside services for Mrs. Mabel C. Finch aged 72 who died Friday morning at her Silver City home will be held at 10 o clock Wednesday in the cemetery at Fort Bayard. Bor and Mrs John Cunningham and their children Andrew and Moira left early Saturday for Malone New York after word of the death there of Cunninghams father Details and funeral arrangements have not been announced locally.

Three Injured In Traffic Mishap Near Silver City

Three persons were injured Saturday in an automobile mishap on U.S. Highway 180 near Silver City New Mexico. Eloy Vasquez 19 of Silver City overtook while westbound and struck Simon Ortiz Jr 18 of San Lorenzo from the rear. Vasquez veered into a canyon. Vasquez and Vicente Ogas Jr 23 were admitted to Hillcrest General Hospital and Ortiz was treated and released. Vasquez and Ogas were later released from the hospital.

Frontier Days Features Announced for July Celebration

Plans for a four day Frontier Days celebration include a July 14 program. Hugh Hawkins, director, announced that the El Pago Cholbers will perform at 7 p.m. in Light Hall on the Western New Mexico University campus. The Choirbers with 82 members will give the concert. A local man was announced to add humor to the parade on Tuesday, July a flown appearance.

Parade plans announced for Memorial Bay celebrations

NO PAPER TOMORROW reports a parade in Memorial Bay featuring a clown in full regalia with grease paint red hose and oversized shoes. Hue Garrison Hit By Mortar Fire Killing Four

Four killed and seventeen wounded as Communist gunners shell Hue near the old imperial capital. Mortar barrages struck the South Viet Nam sector headquarters and nearby areas, briefly igniting fires at the Huang Sung Hotel and wounding civilians. Marine and South Vietnamese units pushed to secure populated zones while air strikes targeted North Vietnamese routes and bases along the demilitarized zone.
