A 4 to 4 tie by the Supreme Court blocks the Richmond Virginia cross district desegregation plan, delaying merger with nearby counties. Critics hail a potential halt to cross district busing while supporters warn the issue remains unresolved and could reappear next term with Detroit cases.
Democrats say for the first time they expect to raise more money than Republicans at annual banquets supporting congressional campaigns. Rosalind Wyman notes Watergate and GOP scandals aid Dems while pre fund raisers in several states draw strong interest. Dallas and Texas parties show large commitments ahead of a $5 plate banquet with thousands expected.
Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital report a computer analysis of 2 222 Boston area junior and high school students predicting drug use in 1971 from five nondrug factors. The study found 1 percent accuracy for nonusers who later used marijuana only and 77 percent for nonusers who progressed to both marijuana and hard drugs. The data, presented at a National Academy of Sciences meeting, show nondrug info suffices to separate groups with 72 percent accuracy for predicting any drug use. The authors note these are statistical probabilities for groups, not individuals. Mrs. Davie Mae Williams 82 died in Long Beach California after a long illness. A native of Odessa Texas she lived in Lakewood California ten years and had resided previously at B Ranch Hurley and Arenas Valley. Survived by three daughters and many grandchildren. husband and five children predeceased her. Funeral at Curtis-Bright Chapel Thursday at 2 PM, Bishop Thomas R. Shelley presiding. Interment Memory Lane Cemetery.
The Office of Navajo Economic Opportunity at Ft DeFiance will continue services on the reservation for three more months after a 1.4 million dollar grant. Arizona Congressman John Connolly announced the grant as ONEO faced a shutdown after funds were frozen by the administration. Directed by James Atcitty, ONEQ runs several economic opportunity programs on the reservation.
Tyrone Chapter No 41 held a Mothers Day themed ceremony led by Worthy Matron Cordelia Parker and Worthy Patron Alvin Parker. Mrs Olivete Prevost received the fifty year certificate and pin while other honorees included the youngest mother Mrs Sharon Hunt and the oldest Mrs Myrtle Augustine. Special guests included Mr and Mrs Lloyd Ault and relatives from Lordsburg and California.
Cobre schools host a Wednesday GED diploma ceremony with 19 graduates. State Superintendent Tom Trujillo attends as guest speaker, while Dr. David L. Walker presents the certificates. A social hour and music by the Cobre High School Band follow.
