Georgetown CES Honors 1976 Scholarship Winners

Georgetown Chapter No 4 of the Order of the Eastern Star honored four 1976 scholarship recipients at a May potluck at the Mimbres Masonic Hall. Debra Fowler Michael D French Steve Scholl and Debbie Click received cash awards and Certificates of Honor for Rainbow and DeMolay service and high school achievement.

CHS Student Wins ENMU Scholarship

Betty McAnally of Cobre High School receives a Continuing Scholarship from Eastern New Mexico University for the 1976 fall semester. The award pays 5100 a semester for four years to top ten percent graduates entering as freshmen.

Tremor Shakes Bogotá with Minor Damage Reported

A 25 second earthquake rattled windows in Bogotá affecting Bisqzakia and Caldas provinces about 109 miles from Bagale. Officials reported no casualties or severe damage as the quake registered 4 on the Mercalli scale.

Cliff Schools to Hold Graduation Ceremonies

Cliff eighth grade and senior classes will receive diplomas May 2 at the high school gym. Honor graduates include Debbie Haven Line and Cheryl Hutchison salutorian with Marci Smith galucitatorian and Shelly Hudson galutatorian. Guest speaker is Pat Visick of Kennecott China Mines. Health Services Needs More Money

The New Mexico Health and Social Services Board seeks $400,000 from the legislature to cover shortfalls in county and city support for local health programs. Local governments have reduced funding for county health departments, immunization clinics, family planning, prenatal care, and venereal disease treatment. A $2.50 pharmacist prescription fee was also proposed, to start July 1. The Laguna Social Rehabilitation Center will receive a $123,000 grant over 24 months as the HSSD studies a variable fee schedule.

New Mexico Voter Registrations Grow After Purge

State election officials report 38,905 new registrations in 21 counties after the 1974 purge and before the April 20 deadline. Democrats lead with 25,379 new registrations and Republicans total 10,159. The purge cut rolls from 504,197 in 1974 to 398,363 in 1975, with Democrats remaining more numerous statewide.

Injection Program Starts in Nationwide Flu Immunization

The Center for Disease Control ordered 1,400 jet injectors to immunize up to 1,000 persons per hour for a nationwide fall flu program. A $1,318,915 contract with Veritrin Medical Products of Carlstadt, New Jersey was announced, with 600 more injectors possible at $935 each for state and local health agencies. The campaign targets immunizing 200 million Americans against swine-type flu. Indians in the Connecticut Valley valued their sacred tobacco used for cigars, grown by braves who barred others from tending it.
