Mescalero blaze burns 600 acres near reservation timberland
About 100 firefighters fought a 600 acre fire on Mescalero Apache Reservation land seven miles southeast of Mescalero. Mescalero fire control officer Glenn Enrlich said the blaze was likely man caused, starting in Morgan Canyon an area logged six months ago with ample ground fuel, four miles from Lincoln Nations Forest.

Marine Cpl. David Grijalva of Santa Rita was killed in South Vietnam on April 27. A rosary is set for Friday at Curtis Mortuary chapel, with a funeral mass at Santa Rita Church on Saturday. Full military rites will be conducted at Hanover Cemetery by the El Paso based 4th 8 inch Howitzer Battery. His brother Sgt. Sam Grijalva Jr. escorted the remains home.
