Nixon's role surfaces in 1976 GOP race as Reagan and Ford avoid ruling him out while praising past foreign policy. Reagan says Nixon not now a viable political force but history may judge his future. Ford also ruled him out for current administration.
Delta Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi installed officers at the May 4 meeting hosted by Mrs. Estella Alvarez in Hurley. Gavel guard presented to Mrs. Alice Carreon for loyal service, with ragdrunners crafted by her husband. The program “Hope In Our Heritage” was by Mrs. Angie Garcia as members shared heirlooms. June party plans were discussed.
A Legislative Finance Committee digest finds restrictive specifications limiting bidders, questionable emergency purchases, and misused lease deals in county buys over 18 months ending 1975. The report calls for immediate temporary law fixes and a new county purchasing code, naming firms and amounts across heavy equipment purchases and amendments from 1975.
A free screening of a Mother Teresa film will be shown at St Mary’s Auditorium on Wednesday May 19 starting 9 15 a m Sister Mary Stanislaus says continuous showings will run all day with a break from 2 15 to 2 15 p m for the May crowning at St Mary’s grotto at 1 30 p m Everyone is invited to attend and see the film which Sister Stanislaus notes she first saw in El Paso on May 12 during Mother Teresa’s visit. She adds the nun has received international honors including the Pope John XXII Peace Prize.
The Espanola Board of Education, under open meetings law scrutiny, rescinded its April choice of Mimbres and Associates for architectural work and unanimously moved to George Owen of Santa Fe's firm. Atty General Anaya had charged the board with a violation after six bidders were rated on separate ballots. Nearby, Nihonmachi Terrace in San Francisco opened as a jointly sponsored housing project for families and seniors by three religious groups.
Luther E. Jack Mitchell aged 62 died Friday in El Paso Texas. Services set for Tuesday at 10 30 a m at Arenas Valley Community Church with Rev Eugene A Bjork officiating. Interment at Memory Lane Cemetery. Pallbearers named Oscar Cotrum Robert Saunders Ernie Christian Paul Pelayo Frank Carbajal Milo Bennett. Curtis Bright Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
AP reports Robert S. Hatfield of Continental Can Co says per capita can use reflects living standards. He cites Americans at about 350 cans yearly, Canada around 250, and Australia and the United Kingdom near 200 each.
