Central Postoffice Dedication Draws Crowd of 300

About 300 people attended the dedication of Central’s new post office building on a cloudy morning. Postmaster Calixto Garcia, in service 19 years, welcomed guests and introduced master of ceremonies Robert L. Ingraham. Guests included postmasters from Hurley Bayard Ft. Bayard Turnerville Santa Rita Hanover Red Rock and Silver City. Emma Anderson noted her stepfather Hiram J. Hutchinson was Central’s first postmaster in January 1887. Rev Casimir Petruskas offered a prayer.

China says it detonated second atomic bomb

Peking Radio announced Communist China had exploded its second atomic bomb to cope with nuclear blackmail and U S threats. The test, described as a success, occurred at 10 a m Peking time and likely took place in Sitikiadng Province in northwest China.

Fireworks Display for July 4 Scheduled in Silver City

Hugh G. Wawkins chair of Frontier Days Celebration and Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce announced a July 4 fireworks display in Silver City. A professional firm from Enid Oklahoma will present a novel program with fixed scenes and aerial salutes starting at 1 PM Sunday. location to be announced. A special committee led by Hank Thomas seeks donations from citizens and firms to cover costs, with contributions welcome at committee members or the Chamber of Commerce office.

Hooker Dam Developments Break Fast Says Franks

Grant County Development Committee met in the Milner-Murray Hotel to hear Franks of the water resources committee report rapid progress on Hooker Dam after the Central Arizona Project approval. A definite commitment could come before summer's end as Arizona California water disputes ease. Marble Head and Bridge Canyon dams seem dropped. other sites on upper Gila studied. New proposals call for a larger Hooker Dam and more sites along the Gila. The Mimbres River McKnight Canyon feasibility study is about half done after an initial $7,500 in local notes. A Damsiters Membership Drive will be launched next Thursday to retire those notes, funded by proceeds. State Game and Fish Department covers first-year costs. report on Silver City Watershed program to follow.

Loyalists violate cease fire in Santo Domingo air attack

Aerial strikes by Dominican air force planes near the U S Embassy and at the rebel radio prompted protests to the OAS and UN. Rebels reported two P51 Mustangs and four Texan trainers involved. One child, Jose Ivan, 4, was killed. Residents blamed U S forces. State Department noted the incident.

Carnival Employee Shot Accident Near Grounds

Ivan Henry, about 25, a Liebrand Bros. Carnival employee, was wounded in the left thigh by an accidental discharge of a .22 caliber pistol while two men practiced near the carnival grounds. He is in good condition at a local hospital. The incident was investigated by Silver City police and Grant County Sheriff deputies.
