U S and South Vietnamese forces claim to have crushed the Viet Cong second wave offensive in Saigon. Police sources estimate only 150 enemy fighters at peak, with 90 to 30 percent killed or captured inside the city. Tet era fighting began January 31 with 4,000 to 5,000 Viet Cong in Saigon.
The 48th annual New Mexico Wildlife and Conservation Association convention gathers in Silver City with 100 plus delegates expected. Keynote by Dr Marvin Wilkening Saturday at 9 30 am and banquet by N A Bill Winter at 7 pm.
About 300 New Mexico residents plan to join the Poor People Campaign march in Washington. Organizers list 103 from Las Vegas and 75 from Albuquerque among signups as the caravan passes through Albuquerque and Santa Fe on May 17 18.
County Agent Jim Gilstrap reported 26 inches of rain on Thursday caused significant crop damage in Lovington. Young cotton leaves were damaged with about half of the crop likely needing replanting. alfalfa saw minor losses as well.
The George Wallace delegation for Catron and Grant counties will meet at the Murray Hotel Martha room at 1 30 p m Sunday. A 25 minute film on the California campaign will be shown followed by a discussion and county officer elections chaired by state chairman Lr RE Letta. Officials for Mountain States Telephone Co and the Communications Workers of America AFL CIO signed a three year contract affecting 14 300 union members in seven Western states The agreement covers plant and traffic employees in Arizona Colorado Idaho New Mexico Utah Wyoming and El Paso Tex It becomes effective immediately if ratified by May 31 The pact calls for a wage increase

Ex deputy Romero and Jimmie Barreras of Reserve pleaded guilty to burglary and received five years probation. Judge Barrett Burk presided in Socorro. The case stemmed from the Van Hutcherson raid on Sand Flat Road, Aragon, with items stolen from the ranch not recovered.
Editorial urges support for Hooker Dam on the Gila River and opposes Sierra Club criticism. It argues the dam and lake extend into the Wilderness only slightly and were planned before the Wilderness boundary. The piece calls for members to back the project more strongly than before.
