Mother's Day Mass Offered at St Mary's

A Mother's Day outdoor mass will be offered at St Marys on Sunday May 11 at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Steve Sinutko presiding. The mass runs for twenty four hours to honor all who assisted St Marys carnival at Gough Park and others who helped Silver City Bayard Lordsburg.

Noted Writer To Speak At New Mexico Folklore Event

Dr. Thomas M. Pearce, renowned author of New Mexico Place Names and biographer of Mary Hunter Austin, will be the luncheon speaker at the thirtieth annual New Mexico Folklore Convention on Saturday May 10. Pearce, a UNM retiree and former English department head, has written several Southwestern works and studied Shakespeare and English evolution. Reservations for the luncheon in the WNMU Student Memorial Center are through the Public Information office.

In Jesus Name group performs in Quemado

The Albuquerque based music group In Jesus Name performed in Quemado on April 18 under sponsorship of The Newman Center. The program featured religious selections written by group members and appealed to young adults though suitable for all ages. Attendees included Anita Sendoval Christina Q Ortega and Mary Aguilar from Western New Mexico University. Father Steve Szmutko sponsored Silver City students and Fran Broadhurst provided transportation.

Rotary Names Exchange Students for Coming Year

Rotary selects Margaret Grace Stermer and Annette Louise Veneill as the exchange students for the next year. Stermer, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Stermer, will study in Sweden at Hasslehalm University while Veneill, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lewis Veneill, will attend the University of Utah. Both must maintain an average of 3.5 or better to reach the honor roll. Steven D. Sutherland, a Cobre High School graduate, is mentioned in the same context.

Western New Mexico Museum adds Sunday hours in May

During May the Western New Mexico University Museum will open Sundays 1 to 5 p m in addition to 9 to 5 weekdays to accommodate more visitors. Exhibits include 1910 1915 period rooms, a fisel collection of Southwestern Indian pottery, the Hispani Heritage exhibit, and a loaned display The New Mexican Santero. The museum urges early viewing before renovation later this spring. Roadside stalls in Jamaica offer native wood carvings in mahogany and cedar. Don Lane will speak at the Mother's Day program Sunday May 11 at the Veterans Center. Lane is a Silver High freshman and a Gila Chapter Order of Demolay member.
